How to Use a TENS Unit

How to Use a TENS UnitUsing a TENS Unit

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and machine that provides this stimulation is called a TENS unit. The TENS unit is designed to alleviate pain, especially for those who have problems taking medicine for the same.

A TENS unit can be used to reduce or eliminate both short term pain such as post-surgery pain or pain suffered due to an accident, and long term pain that is caused by medical conditions like arthritis, cancer pain and muscle or back pain.

Using the TENS machine

Follow the following steps before you start your treatment using a TENS unit:

  • Ensure that the TENS unit is properly plugged into a power source. Else, check the battery level to make sure it is fully charged.
  • Check to see if all the control knobs are in an 'off' position before you commence your treatment.
  • Clean the skin area, where you plan to place the electrodes, with rubbing alcohol (preferably) and dry it completely.
  • On the cleaned skin areas, apply a thin coat of the provided gel upon which your electrodes would go. The gel helps in sending the electric signal to the nerves effectively.
  • Next, attach the electrodes to the just cleaned skin area of the affected part of the body with a sticky patch or tape.
  • Now, you may hook the pin connectors onto the end of the electrode wires and plug the same into the TENS unit.
  • Finally, adjust the control knobs to your required settings to start the treatment, which will be indicated by tingling sensation on the affected area.

Using Different Adhering Materials

Reusable Self-adhering

  • While using reusable self-adhering, take out the required number of electrodes from the given pouch and reseal it back to protect the spare ones, if any.
  • Next, connect the lead wires and then remove the electrodes from the liner. Peel off the liner and store it appropriately.
  • Apply some gel to the electrodes if they are too dry, before placing them on your skin.
  • Make sure that you're not sitting/lying near water while using the electrodes.
  • After continued use over a period of time, the stimulation from the electrodes might get reduced. Replace them with the new spare ones at this stage.

Using Multi-day Self-adhering

  • If you are using the multi-day self-adhering, the electrodes can stay in place for 2 to 5 days and can be used around water, like in a shower etc.
  • Before removing them from the paper liner, connect the lead wires to the electrodes.
  • Next, remove the liner from the electrodes and you are good to go.

Using Carbon Silicone with Skin Mounts

  • When using Carbon Silicon with skin mounts, start by cleaning and drying the black electrode.
  • Peel off the liner from the adhesive mount
  • Next, after aligning the black electrode onto the adhesive, press it securely into place and making sure that no air bubbles are trapped in between.
  • Now, place the lead wires into the electrode and remove the liner from the adhesive. Put the liner away in storage for future reusing.
  • Finally, replace all adhesive mounting after a period of three to five days.

Notes of Caution:

Always turn off the TENS unit and unplug the electrode wires after the completion of each treatment. Also, the TENS unit (or any similar machine) should ONLY be used in consultation with your physician.
