The EMS unit, or Electronic Muscle Stimulator, is similar to a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator) unit, and can be used to treat muscle injuries or chronic pain.
While the TENS and EMS units function in a similar way, the main difference between the two is that the TENS unit stimulates the sensory nerve endings whereas the EMS unit stimulates muscle motor nerves.
